About the Journal
Aims
The Khazar Journal of Water and Environment (KJWE) is an international, peer-reviewed, free of charge, open-access journal. The journal is dedicated to advancing scientific understanding at the interface of water systems, environmental processes, and computational intelligence. It provides a rigorous platform for original research that links fundamental hydraulics and hydrological science with state-of-the-art data-driven approaches to address global challenges in water security, climate resilience, and sustainable water and environmental resource management.
The journal welcomes innovative research and review contributions that integrate theory, observation, and computation to improve the understanding, prediction, and management of water-related processes across terrestrial, aquatic, and atmospheric environments. In particular, it emphasizes the development, application, and critical assessment of intelligent modeling frameworks including machine learning, deep learning, artificial neural networks, hybrid AI systems, remote-sensing-based analytics, and digital-twin technologies in hydrological, hydraulic, and broader environmental contexts.
Scope
The journal covers a focused yet comprehensive spectrum of topics:
- Core Hydrological Processes: Fundamental behavior of surface-water and groundwater systems, marine and oceanic environments, precipitation dynamics, evapotranspiration, infiltration, runoff formation, and soil-moisture variability.
- Hydraulics and Hydraulic Structures: Experimental and computational fluid mechanics, sediment and flow dynamics, modeling water and pollution in porous media and the performance, design, and safety of major hydraulic structures and stormwater systems.
- Irrigation and Drainage Systems: Design, optimization, and management of irrigation networks, advanced water‑application technologies, soil–water–plant interactions, and drainage solutions for salinity and groundwater control.
- Atmospheric and Climate Processes: Weather and climate phenomena affecting hydrological systems, including extreme events, weather prediction, remote sensing, and climate‑model applications for water‑resource planning and management.
- Climate–Water Interactions: Effects of climate variability and change on hydrological cycles, droughts, floods, and long‑term water availability.
- Water Quality and Hydrochemistry: Physical, chemical, and biological processes governing contaminant transport, nutrient cycles, and the health of aquatic systems.
- Ecohydrology and Environmental Interactions: Coupled hydrological–ecological processes across wetlands, rivers, lakes, and coastal environments.
- Water Resources Engineering and Governance: Integrated water‑resources management, water policy and governance, transboundary water issues, and the use of geospatial and decision‑support tools.
- Hydrological Modeling and Data Science: Conceptual, physical, and data‑driven modeling including AI and machine learning for prediction, forecasting, and uncertainty assessment.
- Regional Hydrology of the Caspian and South Caucasus: Hydrological behavior of the Caspian Sea, its tributaries, and regional basins such as Kura-Aras as a transboundary river basin, including sea‑level variation, coastal processes, and shared‑water governance.
Khazar Journal of Water and Environment strongly encourages interdisciplinary submissions that bridge hydrology and hydraulics with related fields such as meteorology, climatology, geology, environmental and earth sciences, agricultural science, and data science.
